In the U.S. if you oppose NAFTA, PNTR, TPP, or Fast Track Authority for the Executive branch you oppose free trade and are therefore a heretic. The globalists who defend free trade as mantra fear President-elect Trump's trade talk and they react negatively to UK PM May’s aggressive talk on leaving the EU and pushing forward on a hard Brexit. They claim these two leaders are attacking free trade.
They are wrong. The U.S. does not enjoy free trade.
Free trade is equal access to markets among trading nations. It means comparable levels of trade barriers to imports. It means equal treatment at ports of access and distribution channels. The U.S. hasn’t enjoyed anything close to free trade since before WWII.
Out of hubris, arrogance, or the desire for re-election provided for by donations from interested parties, American policy makers (read poorly qualified members of Congress) have for decades established a policy of UNILATERAL free trade. What does that mean? China keeps her barriers to U.S. exports up while the U.S. drops barriers to Chinese imports. Mexico keeps her barriers to U.S. exports up while the U.S. drops barriers to Mexican imports. Japan keeps her barriers to U.S. exports up while the U.S. drops barriers to Japanese imports. It means S Korea keeps her barriers to U.S. exports up while the U.S. drops barriers to S Korean imports. It means acquiescing to China’s daily manipulation of the Yuan to peg it to the U.S. dollar to ensure their labor cost advantage over the U.S. labor force remains in place.
Free trade as a term is twisted and abused. Since 1974 free trade in America has resulted in a transfer of more than $33 TRILLION (source Census.gov) in U.S. wealth to foreign nationals, mostly in Asia and the Middle East.
Free trade in America will result in yet another yearly international trade deficit for 2016, reaching nearly $800 billion.
Free trade has ruined the American middle class.
Free trade has lain waste the manufacturing landscape from Maine to southern California.
Americans wants trade. America benefits from trade. America wants and needs FAIR TRADE. DJT, don’t let the Free Trade apostles trick you.
